Many countries have uneven terrain, leading to long downhill sections on highways. Heavy-duty trucks, due to their large weight, require much greater braking force than regular vehicles. On long descents, conventional drum and disc brakes can overheat, causing brake fade, which increases the risk of accidents.
To ensure the safety of heavy-duty trucks on downhill roads, some countries require heavy vehicles to be equipped with retarders or other auxiliary braking systems. Retarders are currently the most effective solution.
