China has a vast territory, showing a trend of high in the west and low in the east. Most of the expressways connecting the east and the west have long downhill sections. Due to the large dead weight of heavy trucks, the braking force required for braking is much greater than that of ordinary vehicles. When ordinary drum and disc brakes are used for long downhill, the phenomenon of brake force decline (i.e. "heat recession") will often occur due to the temperature rise, which will lead to traffic accidents.
To ensure the downhill safety of heavy trucks, the national standard GB7258-2017 stipulates that vehicles including heavy trucks should be equipped with retarders or other auxiliary brakes. The retarder is the most ideal way at present.
